Tell your loved ones first, and in person if possible!

Your closest family and friends might be upset if they find out that you’re engaged from an Instagram post. If an in-person visit isn’t an option, a video call is a great way to share the news as well!

Consider enjoying the moment privately before telling anyone.

While you’re probably so happy that you want to shout it from the rooftops, taking a beat to soak in the moment together is important, whether it’s a few hours or a few weeks. This is a huge milestone in your life together - celebrate that!

When people ask about wedding plans, keep it vague.

Whether you have plans in the works already or not, it’s likely that your guest list isn’t finalized at this stage in the game. Sharing details might imply that that person will be invited to the wedding. Sharing less helps avoid any hurt feelings if someone doesn’t make the final guest list down the road.

With those in mind, here are some fun ways to spread the news:

  1. Traditional 📰: Back before social media and the common use of computers, there was the newspaper marriage announcement, and you can still do this today! You can submit a photo and a small writeup about yourselves to your hometown newspaper or local publication and they’ll print it in their next issue. This might cost a small fee, but makes a cool keepsake!

  2. Snail-Mail 💌: Think postcards, printed cards with or without a photo, perhaps custom stationery with your soon to be married names… if you’re holding an engagement party, this can also double as an invitation to that as well. The options are endless, but remember, this is NOT a save the date or an invitation, so don’t share any wedding details with this!

  3. Social Media 💻: Most people opt for the social media announcement due to its ease, cost-effectiveness (it’s free!), and its versatility. Use a single snapshot from your engagement moment or a selfie with your new bling, or create an Instagram reel or TikTok video with photos of you two over the course of your relationship and post away! A few content ideas:

  • Seasonally-Inspired:

    • Carve pumpkins with a ring on it or the words “just engaged”.

    • Wear your coziest fall outfits and take engagement photos with the fall foliage.

    • Create or purchase a Christmas ornament with the year of your engagement

    • Bundle up and take engagement photos in the snow

    • Take photos together with the spring flowers

    • Draw your names in the sand and take a photo from above

    • Grab a fun ring-shaped pool floatie and a bottle of bubbly and have a pool day. Don’t forget the trendy heart-shaped sunglasses!

  • Have pets? Take photos with your furry friends with sign that says “My pawrents are getting married!”

  • Love coffee? Head to your nearest Starbucks to get your favorite beverage and have your barista write “The future mr/mrs.” on your cups.

  • Outdoorsy or share a fun hobby together? Running, rock climbing, biking, hiking, camping, etc. - Take a photo of you both enjoying that hobby with the ring included!
